Our objective today was to try and locate site of Fort Seward NE of Garberville. Well after the GPS leading us astray twice and traveling on very narrow, winding, rutted roads and realizing in spite of John putting in correct GPS coordinates, we were unable to locate. If the car doesn't need new brakes, tires and alignment after this tense drive, it will be a wonder. In some areas part of the road was washed out and became single lane. Not a drive I wish to repeat. We were both hungry and decided to pop into the Chimney Tree Cafe on the Avenue of the Giants in Phillipsville.
Nice to relax and enjoy a good lunch under the Redwoods. Toured the Lving Chimney Tree a 78 ft Redwood that has been hollowed out by fire. With the Redwoods the dry central core is destroyed by fire, but the moist outer layers of the tree survive. This tree was hollowed out in 1914. As you enter through a doorway you can view the sky above.
Tomorrow we are going to try and find 2 WWII Radar sites that are now FAA owned.
