Arrival Cherry Point MCAS-Pelican Point Campground

22 March 2018

Our departure today for Cherry Point MCAS NC and Pelican Point Campground was a short 50 mile trip via Hwy 17 and 70.We will be here until the 31st.

The base is located in Havelock, NC and built in 1941 as old as I and currently home to the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing. Congress appropriated almost $15,000,000 for the construction and clearing of 8,000 acres of swamps, farms and timberland. Construction began 17 days before the attack on Pearl Harbor. Cunningham Field was the original name and late renamed MCAS Cherry Point after a local Post Office set among cherry trees. There are over 8500 active duty, 28,000 family members, 5700 civilian employees.

The campground is located on the Neuse River and has 30 sites. It gets rave reviews and we can understand why as it is well maintained with a very friendly staff. Facilites of laundry and bathhouse are immaculate. Another feature I like are the deer who wander through the campground at dusk. Sites are concrete, level and angled for privacy with full hookups at a cost of only $25/day. This is definitely one of 5 best military campgrounds. Just wish we had more time here.
