Last Week in San Antonio & Heading Down the Road

13 December 2017

Our last week in San Antonio was spent visiting a dear friend, Sandy, who recently lost her husband, Charlie. Had he lived they would have been married 60 years in October. Charlie was John's boss at Randolph AFB and they became good friends after their retirement. Up until several years ago, Charlie and Sandy hosted an annual barbeque on their ranch in Ingram for friends and family. We never miss a visit when we are in San Antonio. Sandy who is 80 looks fabulous..even after a recent heart attack after Charlie died..brought on by stress and heartbreak. Sandy treated us to lunch at a local cafe. We had a good visit and conversation about Charlie.

Tonight we out for Pizza with Eric, Cindy and Parker. It is called Mod Pizza and very much like Pieology in Las Vegas where you go thru the line and select your toppings. John thought it was somewhat better than Pieology, but I like both.

Anyway, had wanted to get a photo of all the family, but seems someone is always missing due to schedule..Kendyl had to go to work and Parker had cheerleading practice so took one off their Christmas Card.

Today we departed Fort Sam for 1 night in Beaumont at a park we stayed in 2013..Gulf Coast RV.. very nice with pull thru and large..They serve breakfast in the mornings starting at 730..biscuits and gravy, waffles, cereal etc. Definitely recommend..easy access off IH 10.  Traffic as usual going thru Houston a mess..took us 90 minutes to get from Katy to Downtown.  Think this will be our last time coming this way. Leaving San Antonio, we stopped at Buc-ees for breakfast Burrito and  again in Baytown for gas and lunch sandwich that we saved for dinner.  Sure am going to miss these stops.

Drive from Beaumont to Gulfport on IH 10/IH12/IH10..very bumpy..They are gradually repairing and repaving. Stopped again for gas in Layfayette and with our Good Sam card paid $1.93 at Pilot. This drive takes you through the Atchafalaya Swamp. Be sure and stop at exit 121 at the Visitor Center. We just stopped for picnic lunch as we have been here several times prior. At Baton Rouge you take the IH12 for 85 miles to IH10. This bypasses New Orleans.

We will be at Shields Navy Base until 2 January 2018..this is our 4th time here. The campground is a bargain at $19/nt until the 1 January..then $23.  On the 2nd we depart for Pensacola Navy Base for 2 weeks.

Weather is not so good as rain due off and on during our stay.
