Campground Get Together and More

16-22 February 2017

On the 16th we had a barbeque get together with our RV friends. Pat and Darwin do a great job of organizing our get togethers and the campground has provided us with ample picnic tables in the circle. We each bring our own entree to barbeque and a side dish. These are always fun and seems the group increases each year. Thanks again for bringing us into the fold in 2014. It is good that we can all be in the same circle for the most part.

Having Fun

21st  the Campground had a get together at the Commons on base for February Birthdays and Anniversaries.Pizza and cake served. A Bouncy House was provided for entertainment. Just had to experience this at least once and maybe my last time. With help I was able to climb up to the slide. Now I have something to tell my grandkids. The staff did a great job putting this treat together. Pizza and Cake were very good.

Afterward we went over to the Thunderbird Museum which just reopened after extensive renovations. Very nice display and I was able to capture some photos from a video. Wish I could take same great photos from campground.

Earlier in the week we met Rose Mary and Chuck at Sweet Tomatoes for lunch. They have good salads and soup.Think we over ate as we came home and took a nap and even skipped dinner. Keep forgetting to take photo so below is picture from their 50th Anniversary party last February.

Visit with Jill and Cliff-Lake Havasu

15 February 2017

We departed at 730AM for the 140 mile drive to Lake Havasu to visit good friends Cliff and Jill.  We met them in 2013 at the Fleetwood factory in Decatur Illinois and later in St Ignace, MI and Missoula MT on return trip to Oregon. In 2015 we got together in San Diego and they took us out on their sail boat. They have since moved to Lake Havasu and  now have a pontoon. We drove down last year and visited over lunch. Strange how a fate brings friends together. I am so glad we have kept in touch.

Brief history on Lake Havasu and the town noted for the London Bridge. The lake itself is a large reservoir behind Parker Dam on the Colorado River between California and Arizona. Aside from recreation, the lake's main purpose is  water for pumping into two aqueducts. The lake and town were named after the Mojave word for blue. The lake brings in around 750,000 visitors annually. Robert McCulloch who purchased London Bridge, purchased 3500 acres of lakeside property along Pittsburgh Point that was eventually transformed into "the island". The town today has a population of around 60,000 and in the winter can swell to over 100,000. McCulloch expanded his land purchase  by purchasing another 13,000 acres and Lake Havasu City was established in 1963.

After visiting, we drove to the Marina and  enjoyed a pontoon ride on the Lake over to a Casino on the California side for lunch. The day was so relaxing and enjoyable. Thank you dear friends for a wonderful afternoon, lunch and your warm hospitality. Until next time.

Our drive back via IH40 to 95 north through Searchlight touching on 3 states..Nevada, California and Arizona. Not much traffic until Henderson and LV. On the way back, John found a marker for Camp IBIS established as a  desert training base during WW II 350 miles wide and 250 miles deep out in the middle of desolation. Must have been brutal, not  to mention coping with the rattlesnakes and other critters.

Camp Ibis Marker

Stopped at In n Out for quick hamburger. Long day,but  well worth it. This was our 3rd visit to Lake Havasu, the first in 2013 or 2014.

Valentine's Day

14  February 2017

For Valentine's Day we met Chuck and Rose Mary for lunch at Kneader's Cafe and Bakery. This was our first visit and very pleased. Cafe has a bakery filled with decadent delights..we passed, but may return for just dessert. The sandwiches and homemade soups delish. Definitely recommend.

In the evening we spent with some of our friends from the campground to Red Lobster thinking if we got there early we would not have to wait, but as it turned out an hour's wait. They were featuring Lobster Fest. Must say somewhat disappointed in the food and cost was outrageous, but getting together with friends was nice.

Tomorrow we drive to Lake Havasu to visit friends Cliff and Jill. Really looking forward to visit.

Back at Nellis

11 February 2017

We arrived back at Nellis AFB Desert Eagle Campground on the 5th and have had a busy week gathering with friends and doing RV repairs and errands.

Site 11

It is good to be back as we enjoy our RV visits with good friends. On Tuesday we went with good friends Chuck and Rose Mary who live here to the Bagel Cafe..lots of laughs, good food and visit. Looking forward to many more visits while we are here until the 5 April.

On Monday what started out to be a run to the RV store for parts, ended up being a day of errands and not returning until 4PM. After having the mobile wash out for washing the RV, we went to two RV stores for parts. John then realized he had left his ATM card in the machine at the base Exchange so we went back to get it. We then went to Salted Malted for lunch, Walmart, Good Sam's for car wash, Dollar store for crossword books and finally home. Did get a good picture of snowcapped Mt Charleston.

Wednesday we joined Pat, Darwin, Bill, Lorraine, Deb, Warren at Olive Garden for dinner.

Thursday we visited with our group and later went to Pieology for Pizza. Fortunately we are all in the same area that makes visiting easy.

Misty & Misty (Bill and  Lorraine's Dogs)

All this eating out has added a few extra pounds so we passed on the seafood buffet at Aliante on Friday.

Have been walking around the campground at least 4 times a day and sometimes Pat walks with me.

John replaced the broken screendoor latch and  pressure release valve on the water heater. Still  more to do in time.

It was 60 years ago today that John joined the Air Force and retired in 1979. Thank you, dear, for your service.

Missed the lunar eclipse, Snowmoon and comet last night due to cloud cover.

Have taken some photos of flyovers.
