Fort La Reine Museum-Portage La Prairie,MB

30 July 2016

A very long day..200 miles..11 hours..drive to Portage la Prairie and Brandon via Hwy 1 with side trips.

When we left this morning, our intent was to only visit Portage la Prairie and the Fort La Reine Museum, but since we had cancelled our stay in Brandon, decided to continue on as there were some sites John wanted to visit for his website.

The museum is really more about historic buildings in the town that have either been moved to the site or reconstructed. Not much about the fort except a reconstructed Trapper's Cabin and Trading Post. The original fort (1737-1753) was a French Trading Post located on the Assiniboine River SW of town. The original fort was abandoned and torn down.

We then drove into Brandon to visit the The RCA (Royal Canadian Artillery Museum). This by far one of the most extensive and well preserved we have visited. It is one of the largest in the country featuring five main galleries. The museum also has an outdoor Gun Park with 28 guns and vehicles.
