Arrival Moab and Tour of Arches

29 June 2015

The drive yesterday from Grand Junction CO to Moab UT was short via IH 70 and south on 191..only 2 hours. Scenery not terribly scenic. Stopped at Visitor Center at exit 188. Between Utah State line and exit 182 there are no services. Moab sits between Arches and Canyonlands NP's. We are staying at Portal RV Resort which is a campground and owner owned RV Lots and Casitas. We are in site 14 and seems like a nice park. Temperature is 107 and no relief in site. Had both A/C's on and still the inside temp was 94.

Decided today get an early start due to heatwave to tour Arches NP. Packed the cooler with water and gatorade. We decided to tour in the morning for good photos. Also, may go back one evening for more photos.

Visitor Center

This was John's first visit and my second (1965). I was much younger and could do more of the trail hikes so was able to view more of the arches not visible from the road. John did manage to hike up to Landscape Arch..2 mile trail up..I made it halfway and decided I needed to walk back to car. The heat was just too much.

Take Plenty of Water

Landscape Arch

Water, ice, extreme temperatures and underground salt movement formed the sculptured rock scenery you see today in the park. Arches were formed by 100 million years of erosion and number over 2,000 ranging in size from 3 feet to the 306 foot opening of Landscape Arch. The landforms are constantly changing as a result of erosion and weathering. It is a beautiful park and a definite must when in the area. The park has several primitive campgrounds and many trail hikes. The driving route is 23 miles with several viewpoints.
