Arrival Naval Amphibious Base Fiddler's Cove RV Park Coronado

30 September 2014

After departing Travis AFB on the 28th, we stopped at the Bakersfield River Run RV Park for 2 nights enroute to our next stop in San Diego. The park is located off Hwy 99 and Hwy 58. Driving into the park is through an industrial area and several hotels, but once you reach the park a very nice surprise awaits. Very nice sites with full hookups, two laundry and bath houses and a very well stocked gift and store. Owners are very nice. There is a large pool and hot tub as well as a very spacious meeting area. Only downside, no picnic tables and no water in the Kern River. Costco is across the Hwy 58 and several restaurants in the area.

Another Awesome Sunset

The drive down IH5 was very depressing due to drought and irrigation laws protecting the smelt and type of frog. Many of the once prosperous agriculture fields and orchards dying. It is a complicated mess. Litter along the highway horrible. Some of the worse we have seen in our travels. IH5 through LA a nightmare..bumper to bumper, agressive drivers and construction. I lived here in the 60's and traffic was a problem then. Did notice that the further south you go into the more affluent areas, roads improve, but still a nightmare. We came over the Tejon pass at 4500 ft enroute and would rather do that 10 times than once through the LA traffic.

We arrived at our next stop early afternoon on the 30th. We are staying at the Naval Base Coronado just 2 1/2 miles down the Strand from Hotel del Coronado for 3 nights. We will return for the month of November. John is here to attend a CDSG(Costal Defense Study Group) conference which  will continue in San Pedro. We will camp close by at Naval Base Seal Beach for the month of October. We camped here last year when Hope and Grandsons visited. Fiddler's Cove RV Park in Coronado is a very nice park with full hookups for $30/day. Overlooks the Navy Marina, San Diego Bay Bay and the Bridge. They just reopened this year after extensive renovation. Looking forward to our return visit so we can do some touring of the area.
