Goodbye Canada, Hello USA

15 August 2014

Leaving Canada today and entering the USA at the Carway border crossing on Hwy 2, we said our goodby and entered Montana.

Our next stop for 5 nights is Columbia Falls RV park in town of same name on the westside of Glacier NP. Our drive took us on the eastside of Glacier NP on Hwy 89 to Browning and then Hwy 2 through East Glacier and West Glacier. The drive was scenic and at times precarious, especially on the portion between St Mary and Kiowa..narrow lanes and curvy. Passed some free range cows on the road. John did a great job of maneuvering the road as I verbally expressed oohs, aahs and oh noes.

Columbia Falls is just north of Kalispell and near Whitefish. 15 miles south of here on Hwy 2 is the entrance to the "Going to the Sun Road" that cuts across Glacier and only for cars and definitely not RV's. If the weather improves, we want to do this once again. Many stops along the way.

When we arrived at campground, it was pouring rain. Just thankful it started in West Glacier as it would have been a horrible drive otherwise. In the evening there was a beautiful rainbow..my photo did not do justice to the beauty.

Columbia Falls RV park is topnotch and would definitely recommend. You can just tell when you pull into a park whether or not the owners care. Sites are pull thru, full service, level, clean, staff very helpful and friendly and laundry ideal. They offer free and very good Wi-Fi and cable.Across the highway is the Visitor Center and shopping is just south on Hwy 2. We did go to the grocery and needed some cash as we came into USA with no funds. Managed to leave our change behind at Tim Horton's for their children's fund.

We then drove to Flathead Lake where it is said some of the best fishing in the Northwest is found. It is a beautiful area starting at Big Fork on Hwy 35 and circling around to Hwy 93 in Somers. We only did a portion. The Lake is the largest natural freshwater lake west of the Mississippi..28 miles long and 15 miles wide. Overlooking the lake are the Swan and Mission mountain ranges. We will drive down the west side on our way south.

Montana is one of our favorite states along with Oregon and Washington. Too bad it does not have the Pacific on the west side.
