LV NASCAR KOBALT 400

8 March 2014

This is a big weekend in Las Vegas for the NASCAR KOBALT 400 with 43 entrants doing 267 laps equal to 400 miles. The speedway is only just down Las Vegas Blvd north from the campground. We had no intention of going; however, when we went over to the Commissary, Austin Dillon who is driving the Cherrios #3 car was signing pictures and tickets to the race were being passed out.
Not a bad deal to get two tickets worth $69/ea seating us in Section 4T row 43. Got two signed photos for Colt and Cade. Austin is from North Carolina, my home state and only 23. He is the grandson of team owner Richard Childress. In 2013 he was NNS Champion and in 2012 NNS Rookie of the Year. In 2011 he was voted by fans as most popular driver. We will be rooting for him. Feel he is going to make his mark in the racing world.

9 March 2014

Today is race day and due to traffic, left at 10AM for a noon race. Took us a good hour to go only a few miles. After parking, walked a good distance to our section. The speedway also caters to RV's--no hookups--at least 1,000 were parked in several areas and the rate ranges from $1600 down to $259 depending on which RV lot you choose and includes admissions to all weekend events.
Noticed many standing on top of RV's to watch race..some had even rigged up a fenced in area. During the National Anthem, the Thunderbirds did a flyover. Weather was hot, food outrageously expensive; however, we are glad we attended.

Austin came in 16. Winner was Brad Keselowski winner of the 2012 Nascar Sprint Series. Dale Earnhardt, JR was 2nd.. he ran out of fuel and tried to coast to finish.

Traffic exiting took us almost 3 hours. Seems they let the paying park lots out first. We finally turned around and found another way out. Wish we had done it sooner. They really  need to have better traffic control. IH 15 southbound was backed up for miles.

Glad we found our way to LV Blvd North. Much closer and easier for base access. Finally got home around 6PM.

I took lots of pictures.

  1. Looks like one Nascar race will be enough for you two. It would be interesting. Did you ever have anyone sitting by you? There is a Nascar track close to Al's mother in KC Kansas. I can't imagine sitting out there in the 100 degree heat, but thousands do. The motor homes are amazing. Fences on top!
