The night before we left Nellis, Chuck and Rose Mary had us over for dinner. Rose Mary prepared a delicious pasta entree with a mixed green salad and apple pie ala mode for dessert. We enjoyed the food, conversation and just relaxing in their warm and beautiful home. Thank you so much..til next year..take care dear friends.
It was a long, 6 hour,325 mile drive north on 95 to Hawthorne NV our next stop for 2 nights. The drive takes you through towns such as Indian Springs,Amargosa Valley,Beatty,Tonopah and other small towns at the blink of an eye. Most are very depressed with old run down trailers and shacks for housing..the result of closed mining areas etc. Yards with abundant trash and junk. Can't imagine raising children in such conditions. Makes our 32' motorhome seem like a palace. We stopped in Beatty at Subway for takeout. This town seems in better shape than other ones.
We arrived in Hawthorne at the Whiskey Flats RV Park..a bright star on Hwy 95. The only RV park we passed that we would stay in.It is just north of town, very well maintained, friendly, efficient and clean laundry and RV sites have full hookups and pull thru. We are on the back row in site 51. Sites have ornamental plum trees and view of MT GRANT. Would definitely recommend this park if driving from Las Vegas to Reno or beyond. Our site was with the Good Sam discount $23.41/nt. They also have a very nice general store and it is next to Safeway.whiskeyflats.net

Hawthorne is the location of the Hawthorne Army Weapons Depot. Driving in on either side of 95 you can see munition bunkers appearing. The Depot receives, stores and issues conventional munitions, demilitarizes and desposes of unserviceable, obsolete and surplus weapons. Last year 7 marines were killed in an accidental mortar shell explosion. The depot is run by an independent contractor.
Hawthorne is the Nevada gateway to Yosemite and the Sierras which is around 70 miles away. It also has two museums that unfortunately are closed on weekends.

We then drove to Walker Lake north of town for some photos and better view of MT GRANT elevation of 11,000 ft.
We leave here for the Fallon Naval Station RV Park around a 70 miles drive. We will be there for a week and this will be our first visit.
