Our blog is to keep family and friends informed of our motorhome journeys.
We have dreamed of this for many years and finally our dream has come true.
We are looking forward to many happy miles ahead.

Acadia National Park

10 June 2013

One of the best weather days and probably our last day to take advantage of the sun.

Had always wanted to visit Bar Harbor and Acadia NP. www.nps.gov/acad
The island is known as Mount Desert Island.

We did the 27mile  Park Loop Road with frequent vista stops along the way. Be sure and visit Sandy Beach, Cadillac loop to top of mountain and Thunder Hole. Our first stop was the visitor center off route 3 4miles nw of Bar Harbor. Purchased the Motorist Loop Road Guide for $2.86. You can obtain info on hiking, cruises and programs.

Frenchman Bay Overlook is first stop. The first record of a European to the bay is Samuel Champlain's visit in 1604. Today, the island is the only place other than Louisiana where land titles can be traced to the French Crown.

Sand Beach is very popular with locals and tourists. The sand consists mostly of crushed shells and marine animals. The numbing effect of the cold water does not deter bathers from enjoying a brisk swim.

Thunder Hole after a storm is an unforgettable sight as the ocean rushes into the slot and fills the void and the water surges upward. Today it was calm.

Otter Cliffs and Point is one of the highest headlands along the Atlantic coast north of Rio de Janeiro. In spite of its name, there are no sea otters on the Atlantic coast.

We stopped for a picnic at Fabbri before going to Cadillac Mountain.

Cadillac Mountain is 1530 feet and the highest point of land along the Atlantic Coast. During certain times of the year, those standing in the early morning hours are the first to see the sunrise. There is a short trail around the summit that affords beautiful views of Bar Harbor and the park.

We then made a brief stop in Bar Harbor for ice cream and walk along the waterfront. The town is very quaint and tourist orientated with lots of shops and restaurants.

It was a good day except did not see any wildlife..was hoping for a moose or eagle sighting. They must be on vacation.
